Wonderland tells the story of author Alice Cornwinkle (a descendant of Lewis Carroll's muse Alice
Lidell) who is struggling with her career and her daughter, Chloe. With a chaotic Wonderland in danger of
disappearing into nothingness, only Alice can restore balance and joy. Audiences will journey with her
through the Looking-Glass from present-day Manhattan to a strange-yet-familiar place where she must reclaim
her daughter, defeat the Queen of Hearts and learn to follow her heart.
The show had its world premiere as Wonderland: Alice's New Musical Adventure at the Straz
Center in Tampa, Florida on 5 December 2009, followed by a run at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas. These
stagings had direction by Gregory Boyd, choreography by Marguerite Derricks and music direction by Ron
Melrose. The creative team also included Susan Hilferty (costumes), Neil Patel (sets), Paul Gallo (lights),
Jon Weston (sound) and Sven Ortel (video/projection design). Photos from the first day of rehearsals have
been added to the Project Photo Gallery.
The cast for the world-premiere production included Julie Brooks (Fiddler on the Roof national
tour) as Chloe, Janet Dacal (In the Heights, Good Vibrations) as Alice Cornwinkle, Jose Llana (The
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) as Hector/El Gato, Karen Mason (Sunset Boulevard, Mamma
Mia!) as Mrs. Everheart/The Queen of Hearts, Darren Ritchie (Dracula: The Musical) as Jack/The
White Knight, Nikki Snelson (Legally Blonde) as Madeline/The Mad Hatter, Ed Staudenmayer (Forbidden
Broadway, The Scarlet Pimpernel) as Richard/The Rabbit and Tommar Wilson (Hair, Hairspray) as
Theo/The Caterpillar. The ensemble included Tad Wilson, who also took on the featured role of the
Jabberwock, along with Grady Bowman, Sae La Chin, Carrie Cimma, Colleen Craig, Dan Domenech, Krystal
Ellsworth, Mallauri Esquibel, Lori Eure, Derek Ferguson, Ashley Galvan, Laura Karklina, Mary Mossberg, Stefan
Raulston, Julius Anthony Rubio, Danny Stiles and Melinda Sullivan.
The developmental staging premiered at the
David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts
(previously called the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center). Performances at the Center's Ferguson Hall
began with previews on 24 November 2009, officially opened on 5 December and ran through 3 January 2010. The
show was the inaugural effort for the Center's Broadway Genesis Project, under the leadership of Judith Lisi.
The show then played at Houston's Alley Theatre, where Frank
has launched such projects as Jekyll & Hyde and The Civil War. The Houston staging took
place on the Hubbard Stage from 15 January through 14 February 2010, with an opening night of 20 January,
and was one of the highest grossing productions in the Alley Theatre's history.
A concept recording of the show has been released, featuring Janet Dacal as Alice, Julie Brooks as
Chloe, Eugene Fleming as The Caterpillar, Jose Llana as El Gato, Karen Mason as The Queen Of Hearts, Darren
Ritchie as The White Knight, Nikki Snelson as The Mad Hatter, Ed Staudenmayer as The Rabbit and Tad Wilson
