La Jolla Playhouse presented the world premiere of Bonnie & Clyde in November and December of
2009. The show tells the story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, ill-fated lovers and outlaws whose tale
has captured the imagination ever since it took place during the Great Depression. It is described as a
"non-traditional score, combining rockabilly, blues and gospel music."
A second run of the show has just been announced as part of the Asolo
Repertory Theatre's 2010-2011 Season in Sarasota, Florida, USA. The pre-Broadway tryout production is
expected to begin previews on 12 November 2010, with a press opening on 19 November. Casting and other
details have yet to be announced, and a "major talent search contest" is planned for April. Season
subscriptions are currently available by calling the box office at 941-351-8000 or 800-361-8388, or by
e-mailing Callcenter@asolo.org. Individual tickets will go on
sale in September.
The show has music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Don Black (Sunset Boulevard, Aspects of Love,
Dracula) and a book by Ivan Menchell (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Cemetary Club, The Prince and the
Pauper), and was directed by Jeff Calhoun (Brooklyn, Grey Gardens, Deaf West's Big
River), with music direction by John McDaniel ("The Rosie O'Donnell Show", Grease!, Annie Get Your
Gun). The creative team also included Tobin Ost as scenic and costume designer, Michael Gilliam as
lighting designer, Brian Ronan as sound designer, Aaron Rhyne as projection designer, Shirley Fishman as
dramaturg and Paul Smith as production stage manager.
The world premiere cast was led by Laura Osnes (South Pacific, Grease) and Stark Sands (Twelfth
Night, Journey's End) as Bonnie as Clyde - some promotional photos have been posted on
BroadwayWorld.com.
They were joined by Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Mare Winningham (Georgia, Amber Waves,
George Wallace) as Bonnie's mother Emma, Melissa van der Schyff as Clyde's sister-in-law Blanche, Wayne
Duvall as the Sheriff, Claybourne Elder as Clyde's brother Buck and Chris Peluso as Deputy Ted Hinton. The
ensemble included Leslie Becker, Daniel Cooney and Michael Lanning, as well as San Diego actors Courtney
Corey, Michael Covert, Victor Hernandez, Michael Mulligan, Carly Nykanen, Mike Sears and Jessica Watkins.
The La Jolla Playhouse production was just honored with several awards at the San Diego Theatre Critics
Circle's 2009 Craig Noel Awards for Theatrical Excellence. The show was named the year's "Outstanding
New Musical" and other honors went to Jeff Calhoun for his direction, John McDaniel for musical direction,
and Laura Osnes and Melissa van der Schyff as leading and featured musical performers. Complete details
are available on the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle website,
which includes photos from the event.
The show began previews on 10 November 2009, officially opened on 22 November and ran through 20 December
at the Playhouse's Mandell Weiss Theatre in La Jolla, California.
