Bonnie & Clyde

Bonnie & Clyde

Lyrics by Don Black
Book by Ivan Menchell

La Jolla Playhouse presented the world premiere of Bonnie & Clyde in November and December of 2009. The show tells the story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, ill-fated lovers and outlaws whose tale has captured the imagination ever since it took place during the Great Depression. It has music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Don Black (Sunset Boulevard, Aspects of Love, Dracula) and a book by Ivan Menchell (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Cemetary Club, The Prince and the Pauper), and is described as a "non-traditional score, combining rockabilly, blues and gospel music."

A second run of the show took place as part of Asolo Repertory Theatre's 2010-2011 Season in Sarasota, Florida, USA. The pre-Broadway tryout production began previews on 12 November 2010, officially opened on 19 November, and ran through 19 December.

Laura Osnes returned to the stage as Bonnie, with Jeremy Jordan (West Side Story, Rock of Ages) as Clyde for the Asolo production. They were joined by Melissa van der Schyff (Deaf West's Big River) as Blanche Barrow, Mimi Bessette (Little Shop of Horrors) as Emma Parker, Kevin Massey as Ted Hinton, Claybourne Elder as Buck Barrow, Wayne Duvall as the Sheriff, Leslie Becker as Cumie Barrow/Governor Ferguson, Zach Rand (Les Misérables and Mary Poppins) as Young Clyde and Kelsey Fowler (Mary Poppins) as Young Bonnie. Ensemble members included Daniel Cooney, FSU/Asolo Conservatory MFA student Dane Dandridge, Victor Hernandez, Laura Hodos, Heather Kopp, Michael Lanning, Kevin Rose, Casey Shea, Tim Shew and local performer Holly Rizzo as the Young Bonnie understudy.

The show had direction and musical staging by Jeff Calhoun (Brooklyn, Grey Gardens, Deaf West's Big River) and music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations by John McDaniel ("The Rosie O'Donnell Show", Grease!, Annie Get Your Gun). The creative team included Tobin Ost (scenic and costume designer), Michael Gilliam (lighting designer), Kevin Kennedy (sound designer), Aaron Rhyne (projection designer), Carol Doran (wig and hair designer), Stephen Landau (music director/keyboards), Coy Middlebrook (associate director), Patricia Delorey (vocal coach), Steve Rankin (fight director), Paul J. The show was named the year's "Outstanding New Musical" and other honors went to Jeff Calhoun for his direction, John McDaniel for musical direction, and Laura Osnes and Melissa van der Schyff as leading and featured musical performers. Complete details are available on the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle website, which includes photos from the event.
