Audiences throughout China, Japan and Korea have had a constant stream of Frank Wildhorn musicals to choose from over the past two decades. Classics like Jekyll & Hyde and Bonnie & Clyde have been running for years and original commissions like Death Note, Mata Hari, Your Lie In April, The Man Who Laughs and others are born out of Asia and migrate onto the musical theatre stages in other countries. With over 20 productions in Asia, Wildhorn has been called, “the most popular musical composer in Korea” by the Korea Times and similarly lauded by others.
Bonnie & Clyde - A Hit on Three Continents
In London, Broadway’s Tony nominated Clyde Jeremy Jordan headlined a series of concert performances of the show's songs in the West End which led to an announcement of the full fledged production debut - Wildhorn’s first West End musical- at the Arts Theatre. Due to popular demand, Bonnie & Clyde reopened at the grander Garrick Theatre in Spring 2023, winning the What’s On Stage Award for Best New Musical and delighting fans at every performance. An original cast recording of the UK production will be released soon.
In Japan, Takarazuka, the Japanese all female musical theatre troupe dating back to 1914, as famous for bending gender and sexuality norms as it is for its lavish productions, (and the site where Frank and Takako met) takes on the beloved musical tale of the infamous couple
Simultaneously, in Sao Paolo, Brazil, the lyrics to Bonnie & Clyde can also be heard in Portuguese at the (venue) where the performers continue to ‘Raise A Little Hell’ nightly.
